Dev-Blog #21 In-game Scavenging
*DISCLAIMER: DoS2 is still in early development. Images, video, and graphics shown, may change or may not appear in the final version of the game.*
The legion of undead are at your doorstep, and all you need to craft an AK-47… but where’s that one item you still need … Welp … guess you’re screwed… Welcome back, Survivors, to another weekly Dev-Blog, and back to where situations like the one above, won’t be too commonplace. Today we wanted to go over the micro tendencies that can sometimes ruin the experience of a game. One of those irritations in DoS1 was finding the right resource in time. For Dawn of Survivors 2, we worked closely with the devs to address situations that may interrupt ‘player flow’. We’re not saying it’ll be a walk in the park to find items, but we think that the current changes may help improve scavenging overall.
1) Resource Locations are More Predictable:
“Where can I find Scrap Metal?” was the common phrase that echoed throughout the community, but it’s something that’s been addressed in DoS2. The locations you travel to will have icons associated with them. The majority of a location’s resources is indicated by its icon. In addition to exploring the land of the undead, you’ll be able to more easily find the necessary resources to defeat the zombies.
2) Items Drop More Abundantly:
Every location will be stacked with resources, whether it’s wood, ore, components, etc. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Zombies: If resources are scarce, the sheer number of zombies will accommodate this. Kill and search their bodies for the items you need.
NPC Survivors: Wandering survivors that you encounter can drop better finds, if you decide to help them.
Air Drops: If you’ve polished your skills, forget waiting for an air drop, just call one in. It can even be right at your home base. You can gain more resources, while testing out your defences, simultaneously!
3) Furniture Can be Converted into Resources:
In DoS1 you could find: makeshift barricades, faulty machinery in cities, and blocked off areas in fields or towns. Now, you can take those things that once got in your way, and turn them into something useful. This is just another example of how we improved the gameplay for Dawn Of Survivors 2.
4) Crafting Some Tools & Weapons Require Fewer Resources:
Just like the scenario at the top, getting that needed resource shouldn’t be at the hands of the games’ RnG. Deciding to fight a horde should be something you can actively predict to be a good or bad idea, rather than basing the situation on your inventory or the environment. It should be your skills that determine the time, health, and level of your character’s progression.
We appreciate and thank you for reading our dev-blogs! Don’t be afraid to ask us and our community members about the game and what’s to come next. Your feedback is helpful for the game’s eventual design and will help grow our community! Tell us what you think on: Facebook, Twitter, and Discord! See you at dawn!
